Rep. Schweikert Meets with Small Business Development Experts at Maricopa Community Colleges to Launch Small Business Week

Tempe, AZ – America’s SBDC Arizona Network (AZSBDC) kicked-off National Small Business Week (May 5 – 11) by hosting a small business roundtable with U.S. Rep. David Schweikert on Monday. The roundtable provided an opportunity for Rep. Schweikert to meet with business owners and AZSBDC team members to discuss the successes and challenges faced by small businesses in Arizona. “America’s SBDC Arizona works with small business owners throughout Arizona to help them start stronger and grow faster,” AZSBDC State Director Janice Washington said. “National Small Business Week puts the spotlight on the significant economic impact that small businesses create in their communities and across our state.” Rep. Schweikert toured the SBDC offices at Gateway Community College and met with Director Washington and SBDC staff. The AZSBDC has helped launch, grow and sustain small businesses in Arizona since 1988. It is part of the national America’s SBDC association, which represents more than 1,000 SBDC Centers across the U.S. “Small Business Development Centers help create success by helping people realize their dreams,” noted America’s SBDC President & CEO Charles ‘Tee’ Rowe. “SBDC impact can be seen in new business starts, sales growth and job creation across America.” In 2018 alone, America’s SBDC Arizona counseled or trained 5,604 individuals, helped its clients start …

Ellen Kirton recognized as the 2015 Arizona State Star

The Arizona Small Business Development Center Network (AZSBDC) announced Ellen Kirton, director of the Pima & Santa Cruz SBDC, as the recipient of the 2015 America’s SBDC State Star for Arizona. Kirton was recognized at a private reception during the America’s SBDC Conference in San Francisco this week. Each year, America’s SBDC recognizes a State Star from each SBDC at its annual conference. The State Star award is given out to an SBDC employee who exhibits exemplary performance, makes a significant contribution to his or her SBDC program and shows a strong commitment to small business. Any SBDC employee is eligible for the award. Ellen Kirton spent 35 years in the banking industry, with her last position as a Senior Vice President and Business Banking Manager at BankOne/Chase. She co-owns an internet-based human resource company, is the author of “Cinderella is Still Dancing” and a public speaker. Recent Maricopa Community Colleges SBDC and Client Awards The Maricopa Community Colleges Small Business Development Center (Maricopa SBDC) has been named the 2015 Small Business Development Center of Excellence and Innovation for Arizona and U.S. Small Business Administration Region IX. This honor is bestowed upon an SBDC Service Center that surpasses performance milestones, builds small business excellence, embraces continuous improvement and champions economic development through small business within their region. Along with the Maricopa SBDC Service Center two clients were also recognized for their outstanding efforts as part of the Tuesday, May 19, Enterprise Business Awards Luncheon showcasing the annual awards from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Sharon Hamilton, President of Sentinel Fence and Contracting was honored as the 2015 Woman-Owned Small Business Champion of the Year. In addition, Lisa Odle, President of Odle Management Group was presented the 2015 Minority-Owned Small Business Champion of the Year. Similar distinctions were bestowed by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce with the 2015 Impact Awards on May 13. Twelve Arizona small businesses were honored for their achievements at the 2015 Arizona Small Business Development Center Network Success Award Luncheon March 24 on the Senate Lawn at the Arizona State Capitol. Nearly 300 members of the Arizona State Legislature, government, business and community leaders throughout Arizona attended this year’s event. “It was a real opportunity to recognize and applaud the achievements of Arizona small businesses,” AZSBDC State Director Janice Washington said. “The winners represent a variety of business sectors, customer bases and communities. The AZSBDC provides targeted guidance to business incubators, technology and innovation focused businesses, and Veteran entrepreneurs. Similarly, we train business owners how to take advantage of international trade opportunities and government procurement contracts in order to grow and sustain their business success. We help strengthen Arizona one business at a time.” The Master Success Award Winner was Arizona Log and Timberworks in Eagar, Arizona. Owners Randy and Sandra Nicoll worked with the Northland Pioneer College SBDC to grow their wood products business creating a sustainable company that would withstand multiple economic fluctuation factors.
